Our Center

The Gardner Center is a research center that sits within Stanford University's Graduate School of Education. Established in 2000 by civic leader and Stanford lecturer John W. Gardner and faculty member Milbrey McLaughlin, the center pioneered the concept of community-engaged research as a way to advance research, policies, programs, and practices that support opportunities for young people.

We continue that work today.

Our vision

Our vision is one of thriving communities that support the growth, development, and vitality of all young people — who are, in turn, equipped to help their communities thrive. This symbiotic relationship, known as community youth development, underpins all we do.

Our partners

Our researchers work with all kinds of organizations that share our mission to support positive opportunities and outcomes for all young people. On any given day, we might find ourselves working with:

An elementary school, high school, or school district;

A nonprofit that provides afterschool and summer programs;

A foundation that funds scholarships to first-generation college students;

County agencies that provide healthcare benefits to low-income residents; or

Policymakers seeking to make systemic change.
