School System Consequences of Birth Outcomes: A Medical School-Education School-School District Collaborative

Main content start

Using a linked dataset of state birth records and individual school records in a high-risk school district, this study examines the association between adverse birth outcomes (i.e., early preterm birth, late preterm birth, and congenital anomalies) and educational outcomes (e.g., attendance, performance, and need for special-education programs).  Researchers also seek to explore the moderating effects of family factors, neighborhood factors, and exposure to community programs.  Findings will help the district and its partners to identify actionable implications for local health-, preschool-, school-based programs designed to improve children’s health and educational trajectories.  Ultimately, findings may inform local, state and regional policy designed to improve long-term health and educational trajectories for all children.
