PRUDENCE CARTER, professor education at Stanford, will be the dean of U.C. Berkeley Graduate School of Education, effective June 30.
A member of the Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE) faculty since 2007, Carter’s teaching and research focus on issues of inequality and the sociology of education, with a particular focus on race, ethnicity, class, gender, culture and identity. Along with writing numerous articles in scholarly journals and in the popular media, she is author of Stubborn Roots: Race, Culture, and Inequality in U.S. and South African Schools (Oxford University Press, 2012) and Keepin’ It Real: School Success Beyond Black and White. (Oxford University Press, 2005) and co-editor of Closing the Opportunity Gap: What America Must Do to Give All Children An Even Chance (Oxford University Press, 2013).
In an email to the Stanford GSE community, the school’s Dean DANIEL SCHWARTZ called Carter’s appointment “bittersweet news.” While “she will be fabulous and lead a great institution forward,” he wrote, “it will also be sad to see Prudence leave Stanford to start her new job. … Her scholarship and leadership have enriched the Stanford GSE.”
Carter, the Jacks Family Professor of Education at Stanford, is a member of the National Academy of Education, a fellow of the American Educational Research Association, a senior fellow at the Learning Policy Institute and a board member for Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth and the William T. Grant Foundation. At Stanford GSE, she is also faculty director of the John W. Gardner Center for Youth and Their Families and had previously served as co-director of theStanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education.
